Field Placement Information/Lesson Analysis: My second field placement was at Canterbury Elementary School in Greendale. This suburban school setting was well constructed to facilitate meaningful student learning. This field placement was focused around Lucy Calkin's Unit of Study workshop model. All three of my lessons in this field were focused on literacy. While in this field I had the opportunity to observe how effective the workshop model is resulting in my strong belief that students learn literacy best when instruction is focused through the workshop model. During this field I was also able to observe the importance of clear set expectations, use of routines, communication, collaboration, and students taking responsibility for their learning growth. In the lesson below I demonstrate my ability to design a lesson plan focused in the method of Lucy Calkin's Unit of Study. I planned a mini-lesson for a large group of second graders focusing on reacting to informational text. During my instruction I modeled for students the explicit thinking I wanted students to do as they were reading informational text. I modeled how to use a posit note to track thinking by using the following prompts, "I think... because...", "This surprises me because...", and "I did not know...". To facilitate student participation, as I was modeling, I had students participate in think alouds. Next, I sent the students off to practice these skills with their own informational texts from their book bins which contain books at each students individual reading level. During this time, I circulated the classroom checking in on student progress and provided support through remodeling my thinking for students as needed. Finally, I assessed the students learning by having them record their own post its of their "reactions" while reading.
